a family heritage Father and son team, Tom and Rob Sinton, bring to Starfield four generations of family wine growing experience combined with an intense desire to reach beyond traditional boundaries to pursue the ultimate quality in cool climate winemaking. Tom Sinton
Tom began his career in 1972 by planting his family’s Shell Creek Vineyard in San Luis Obispo, and managed the 200-acre property while earning a master’s degree in enology from UC Davis until he left in 1984 to found ProBusiness, a human resources outsourcing firm. When he sold the business in 2003, Tom vowed that the next phase of his life would be a return to his original devotion.
While searching for the ideal location to plant vineyards, Tom has been producing wine sourced from Napa and Sonoma fruit. After an exhaustive process to identify the perfect location to plant a vineyard in Northern California, he chose a 30-acre parcel near the Sierra Foothills community of Placerville. 2016 will mark the first vintage of wine produced from the estate vineyards. Rob Sinton
In 2011, Rob, who was inspired by his father’s dream, began developing the skills needed to work in the family business. Rob was first introduced to fermentation science in 2006 through home-brewing (pumpkin beer was a particular favorite!); now, years later, he has completed his studies in viticulture and enology at UC Davis, interned at Keever Vineyards in the Napa Valley, and become a partner in the company. It took just one summer making wine in Napa with his father to change his major at Davis from molecular biology to viticulture and enology. He lives in Napa, and regularly consults on Starfield’s winemaking and blending.
