Lavishing attention on the vineyards!
This is a labor-intensive time in the vineyards. The vines are growing and expanding daily and our field crews will touch each vine four to five times by mid-August. They remove suckers, select fruiting canes, adjust the crop, tuck canes inside the trellis, expose the fruit to sunlight, separate each cluster from other clusters and remove any diseased clusters. Meanwhile we count the clusters in each block and estimate the crop level, assure we can produce premium wine with that crop, and send the crew back to reduce the crop again if required. This is meticulous viticulture! It is the hallmark of Starfield grapes and wine.
When I was 15, I spent an unforgettable summer living with a family in Reims, in the heart of the Champagne district of France. My family operated a large farm, and gathered for meals at lunch and dinner, when they always served Champagne, treating it just like any other wine – as an accompaniment to food. I was amazed that it wasn’t just for special occasions, and consequently I developed a lifelong love of traditional sparkling wine, served as a cocktail or accompanying food.
Summer is coming! This is a beautiful time at the property when the vineyards come to life. Green is the prevailing color with various shades in the vineyards, trees, and shrubs - punctuated by the bright blooming flowers. Construction activities are slowing down so that we can focus on the farming activities. Keep reading for more on latest happenings around here. Thanks for being on this journey with us.
Spring in the Vineyards and we are busy!
Spring came late and suddenly to the Sierra foothills this year, giving us lots to do in the vineyards in a short amount of time. Our flowers also got a late start -- but are now coloring our landscape with vibrant colors. This is a beautiful time of year on the property.
There are lots of things to celebrate this month, Mother’s Day, Graduation, and Memorial Day. Wherever you may find yourself, take time to savor each moment. We suggest you include wine in your celebrations
I planted CInsault to produce a light-bodied red as part of the Starfield wine portfolio. It’s ideal to serve during the warm summer months, and the perfumed aroma is absolutely amazing. There’s no other wine quite like it, and once people have tried it, I think they’ll always go back to it. more
Spring is in the air!
So far this spring we’ve experienced some snow, torrential rains, and sunshine. With all of the weather variations, it is surprising that the vines are starting to leaf out and flowers are blooming. We may be partial, but it’s becoming quite beautiful here.
As the weather gets nicer, enjoy a glass of wine al fresco at the end of the day. We will be doing the same, thinking of you.
Could spring really be on the way?
Just when we thought spring was here, we got some snow which has halted the early rhododendron bloom. The weather hasn’t slowed our progress with our many projects though. Wishing you a happy spring and all of the celebrations this month brings.
An early spring?
We are delighted to see the signs of an early spring with daffodils and rhododendron beginning to bloom. The vines got their winter’s rest while we have been busy working around the property and in planning and designing the tasting room and winery buildings.
This month has lots of opportunity to celebrate. You might want to stock up on your favorite wine prior to Mardis Gras, Valentine’s Day and President’s Day celebrations.
Winter settles in
Winter has been mild so far which gives us time for vineyard maintenance while the vines slumber. Our attention turns to finalizing plans for the tasting room, winery and the access road through the property. With winter the pace slows down and we look forward to catching our breath and completing projects.
Finally, a Winter rest!
It’s hard to believe this year is nearly over. As we reflect back on everything that this year brought, we are truly grateful for you, our customers, our beautiful vineyards that are producing delicious wine, and seeing our vision for the property become a reality.
As you celebrate the holidays with friends and family, we invite you to take a moment to reflect on your blessings and we will do the same, as we raise a glass to you.
