Spring finally arrived!
Spring is finally here and has been rather mild. We have had record rainfall (65" and counting!) and late snow which has caused everything to be delayed this year. What we are looking most forward to this month is to be able to enjoy a glass of wine while gazing out across the property and savoring the beautiful and colorful landscape. We hope you will take time to savor a glass of wine and celebrate spring.
As Cabernet is to Napa, so Aglianico is to El Dorado. Everything we know about the Aglianico in Italy suggests that it will produce fine red wines at Starfield. Our Aglianico is a prized clone that comes from di Vulture, and was brought to California by Antonio Mastroberadino, scion of the family which produces the most famous Aglianicos in Italy.
Enough with Winter!
We are optimistic that spring is finally arriving after months of rain and snow. Daffodils are blooming, rhododendrons are beginning to bloom, and even the turtles have reappeared after their winter hibernation. In the vineyard we’ve begun pruning which will spur the vines to shoot out the new growth.
Rain for Days!
The snow we got early in January proved short lived and now it’s back to the rain. This rainy weather makes us invent projects to keep us indoors as much as possible. Winter reminds us to slow and to relax where possible. We hope you will enjoy Mardi gras with some wine and relaxation.
New Year's Snow!
Wishing you a healthy and prosperous New Year in 2017! Ours began with a light snowfall, our first of the season. It was a nice change from the deluge of rain we’ve received lately. Stay warm and cozy and think of us as you drink wine by the fire.
We were looking for a bright fresh wine to complement our lovely, floral Rhone whites. Fiano stood out because the grapes feature naturally high acidity, which makes the wines crisp and fresh like Pinot Grigio; but as a bonus the wines also develop layers of complexity when barrel fermented with lees stirring. I expect Fiano to love our Starfield terroir.
Like Feels Winter!
We’re beginning to feel the presence of winter with shorter days, cold nights and mornings, and snow in the Sierras. This is the perfect weather for cozy fires with friends while enjoying savory meals and wine. Thanks for being part of our wine activities this year. We are honored that you include our wine in your celebrations. Our wish is for you to enjoy health and happiness during the holidays and coming year.
We're thankful for...
We have a lot to be thankful for this year. It has been a busy season as we harvested our first grapes from our vineyards in Placerville. We’re grateful that we finished harvesting in September since October turned out to be a very wet month with nine inches of rain. Of course we're thankful for the rain even though we are racing to complete our final construction projects for the season, including pouring the last concrete at the amphitheater, paving the lake trails, and getting a new entry gate. And we’re enjoying this cooler weather that makes us want to be indoors by a fire drinking a glass of wine.
We made it through our first harvest. Now we can turn our attention to making wine, and the ongoing construction around the property. It is really beautiful here with the Fall colors and the cooler evenings. It puts us in the mood to drink our reds. We hope you are enjoying this Autumn weather with your favorite (Starfield) wine.
We’ve been busy over the last few weeks with the beginning of harvest at our estate vineyards in Placerville. It’s been exciting (and exhausting!) to see our grapes in bins ready to be transported to the winery, where we press the white grapes and ferment them in barrels, and destem the reds, and ferment them in tanks with the skins, in order to extract the rich color. We can’t wait to introduce you to our Mediterranean varietals: Viognier, Fiano, Marsanne, Tempranillo, and Barbera available in 2017-2018.
