Barbera’s beautiful color, excellent acidity, and fruitiness makes it an ideal variety for the Sierra Foothills. With warm days and cool nights at Starfield, Barbera produces a medium-bodied, fruity red wine that’s terrific for everyday drinking. California’s best Barberas have historically come from Foothills vineyards, and we wanted to make sure we had this delicious wine in our portfolio.
Happy Fall. It’s been a busy month processing our second harvest, which is our largest to date. We can now turn our attention to wrapping construction efforts for the season and preparing the vineyards for a rest. We hope you will enjoy a beautiful bottle of wine to toast the season.
Final Push to Complete Harvest!
We started harvest the end of August and are in full swing. Picking grapes at the optimal ripeness is our focus, and the window is narrow between being ripe and over-ripe. After this crazy year, we also keep a wary eye on the weather which can impact the harvest. So far only 0.05 inches of rain -- which is great! Our other projects are delayed as we focus on picking grapes.
Hope you are enjoying the approach of Autumn, Do not forget the wine!
Gearing up for harvest!
We are just starting harvest! The Roussanne and our earliest block of Viognier are already in, and all our time and attention is focused on managing the vineyard to ensure we produce the best grapes for harvest this year. It all comes down to a few short weeks when the grapes are finally ripe and can be picked. Enjoy these last few weeks of summer!
Summer is worth the wait!
We’ve waited a long time for summer to arrive and it is in full force in the vineyards. The vines are beginning to focus on ripening fruit, trees and shrubs are vibrant, and there are hints of color from late blooming flowers. We’re busy around the property with construction and paving projects. We constantly remind ourselves to slow down and savor the beauty that is all around. We hope you enjoy the beautiful weather and fun activities with family and friends and take time to savor those special moments.
We have the perfect soil and growing conditions to produce an outstanding Marsanne from our Foothills vineyard – so we wanted to try! We planted about 1.5 acres of Marsanne on a rocky, steep, east-facing slope. There it receives abundant morning sun, but as the temperature rises in the late afternoon, the vines quickly drop into shade, cooling the fruit. At nighttime, cooler air flows like a river around the bottom of the hill where the Marsanne is located. By the morning, it’s often 10-14 degrees cooler than the top of the hill – helping produce wines with excellent balance and acidity.
Cause for Celebration!
It’s nearly summer, the vineyards are beautiful in all their leafy exuberance, and our two new release whites are award-winning wines! We hope that with graduation, Father’s Day and summer that you take time to celebrate too and if it’s with a bottle of Starfield Vineyards we would be honored!
It is as if everything has burst into bloom at the same time. Everywhere you look there are spectacular bursts of color from rhododendrons, dogwoods, wild roses, verbena, hydrangeas and azaleas. This the start of the busy season for our grapes where all of our attention and labor will be focused. We hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather and are finding time to celebrate life’s little and big moments.
Spring finally arrived!
Spring is finally here and has been rather mild. We have had record rainfall (65" and counting!) and late snow which has caused everything to be delayed this year. What we are looking most forward to this month is to be able to enjoy a glass of wine while gazing out across the property and savoring the beautiful and colorful landscape. We hope you will take time to savor a glass of wine and celebrate spring.
As Cabernet is to Napa, so Aglianico is to El Dorado. Everything we know about the Aglianico in Italy suggests that it will produce fine red wines at Starfield. Our Aglianico is a prized clone that comes from di Vulture, and was brought to California by Antonio Mastroberadino, scion of the family which produces the most famous Aglianicos in Italy.
